However, there are some things you should take into consideration when choosing a self storage facility. Knowing what to look for can help you find the perfect spot to store your stuff. Here are some things to keep in mind as you begin looking for a storage space.
Location
If you plan on visiting the storage unit frequently to retrieve items, you'll want to choose a facility that's located near your home. However, if you'll be using your storage unit for a college student living in the dorms, a facility close to the school may be more convenient. For long-term storage, you may want to venture a little further away from your home if it means getting a better price on the rent.
Climate Control
For some people, climate control is essential in a storage unit. A unit with heating and cooling can provide the perfect setting for storing antiques, books, wine, and other items that are sensitive to temperature. Climate-controlled units are typically located inside of indoor storage facilities, and they may cost a bit more than a unit in an outdoor facility. However, paying a little extra to make sure your items are safe from damage may be well worth the benefits. Even if you don't need climate control for your items, being able to sort and organize items in a comfortable setting is always a plus.
Available Space
Each storage facility should be able to help you determine exactly how much room you need for your items, but you may want to consider renting something slightly larger than what you currently need. This gives you added flexibility to move in additional items without having to rent a second unit. Give the facility a rough idea of how much you will be storing, and consider renting a size up to meet your potential future storage needs.
Access
Will you be able to access your items any time of day or night? If having 24/7 access is important to you, make sure the facility you choose can offer this. Drive-up access is also important to some people, as it means not having to haul large items from the parking lot into the facility. Should you choose to store a lot of furniture, ask about drive-up access. If the facility doesn't offer this, ask if it provides assistance with transporting items from your vehicle to the storage unit.
Once you have selected the right storage facility, read over the lease agreement to be sure you understand everything that is required of you. This might include putting down a deposit, paying by a certain date every month, and keeping your unit tidy to prevent hazardous storage conditions.
