Having a Storage Unit Makes Having a Home-based Business Easier

Tips for Renting a Safe Storage Unit

When you are renting out a storage space, you expect that you are getting a place that will keep your things safe. You may not know all the different aspects that go into keeping your things safe, but that does not matter. You are renting a storage unit and expect your things to be left alone and to be safe until you come and pick them back up. Well, there are a few things to look for when you are renting out a storage unit. Here are just a few things to look for.

Is it Weatherproof?

There are a few different main types of storage units, inside and outside units. An inside unit will usually cost more, but they are generally a little easier to ensure that your things are safe. An outside storage unit is usually a great place to start. One of the things that you really want to look for in a unit, is if it is weather proof.

You want to make sure that the unit does not have any water stains where stagnant water has been. Water damage is one of the biggest problems that occur when you have your things in a storage unit. It is also a good idea to check on your things after a big rainstorm, just to be sure that nothing is being harmed.

Is it Pest Proof?

When you are looking for a good storage unit to rent, you also want to check for pests like insects and rodents. You can check for rodents by looking for fecal pellets. If there are any creepy crawlers like ants or any other insect, you may want to check with the manager to see what they are doing to keep pests out of the units. Generally storage units do not have a problem with a lot of pests because there is no food, but you do not want your things to become a pests next home or meal.

Is it Burglar Proof?

You may have also thought of somebody breaking into the storage unit and stealing your things. The good news is that most storage units have security systems that will keep your things under surveillance at all times. Most of the storage units will be protected by a large gate with razor wire on top, and have video surveillance. If you decide that you want to rent a storage unit that is inside, there is usually one or two entrances that are highly monitored.
